SHARP – helping you choose the right helmet The Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP) provides an independent assessment of the safety performance of motorcycle helmets on sale in the UK to help motorcyclists make an informed decision when buying a new helmet.
SHARP was launched by the Department for Transport in 2007 after research revealed real differences in the safety performance of motorcycle helmets available in the UK. Whilst the law requires helmets on sale to meet minimum safety standards, SHARP goes beyond these minimum requirements to reveal differences in the safety performance of helmets.
Helmets are purchased from normal stock at UK motorcycle dealers in a variety of sizes and subjected to precise impact tests. These tests are based on many years of detailed scientific research into motorcycle accidents and determine how effective the helmet is at reducing the potential for injuries.
For each model that is tested, a safety rating of between 1 and 5 stars is awarded to enable motorcyclists to quickly and easily identify those helmets offering the highest level of protection. The ratings for more than 390 helmets can now be found on our website and with a continuous test programme, the ratings for further models will be published as soon as they become available.
Free leaflets containing the safety ratings are available at the stand and representatives from the programme will be on hand to provide detailed information about the scheme and answer any questions you may have.
